FAQ
1. What does RP9 stand for?
'RP' stands for 'RobertPam', my name and my wife's name; the '9' stands for the 9th major revision of this printer.
2. What is included with the RP9? We have a basic kit and a deluxe kit. A complete part list can be found in the assembly manual,
3. Do I need glass for the build platform? Yesr, the glass with the same blue tape top layer is flatter and will help with getting the first layer printed correctly.
4. What material does the RP9 use? The printer uses 1.75 mm PLA. Make sure the filament you purchase has a diameter tolerance of 0.05 mm or less.
5. What is your refund/return policy? The refund/return policy can be found here.
6. What is the current lead time for a RP9 3D Printer? We make every effort to keep them in stock. If we do not have them in stock, we post the lead time in the store.
7. Is a heated bed available for the RP9? A heated bed can be purchased online. The Ramps 1.4 controller board has input and output connections for a heated bed and temperature sensor. The firmware will need to have different values and be uploaded to the Arduino. The power supply will need to be upgraded to handle the current (AMPS).
8. Does the RP9 require maintenance? Yes, keeping the machine running smoothly will require occasional light oil or grease on the rails and threaded rods. After the first few prints, the string drive may need to be tightened by moving the nylon tie to the next click. Debris will accumulate on the drive wheel. This can be cleaned with a small brush.
9. How does the RP9 compare with other 3D Printers? We believe our printer is well designed and is a simple and cost effective solution for the price.
10. What software will I need to run the RP9? There are a number of software providers to choose from that will work with different operating systems. Most of them are free. A Popular choice is Repetier.
11. How fast is it? We have printed up to 150 mm/s with success. Experience shows that quality is improved with slower prints.
12.How many extruders does the RP9 have? One.
13. How big a piece can I make? Approximately 200 mm x 200 mm x 200 mm.
14. What quality are the printed objects? Quality of print depends on the model, slicing software, temperature, speed and a host of other parameters working together. Taking time to learn and setup your printer and buying quality filament will ensure a quality print.
15. Does the RP9 have to remain tethered to the computer in order to print? Adding an SD card will allow you to print without a computer. With the proper setup of a LCD and rotary encoder, you can eliminate the computer altogether.
16. What kind of plastic filament does this print with? PLA or ABS or both? The kit will enable you to use PLA. You will need a heated bed to print with ABS.
17. How long does it take to print a design? It could take from a few minutes to a few days depending on the printer set up and the solid volume of the part.
18. Is the RP9 already assembled? At this time, no, it is only sold as a kit. Please review the assembly manual.
19. Can the RP9 be modified to use dual extruders? Yes, however, it would reduce the maximum volume of the print in the Y direction.
20. What diameter nozzle does it use? 0.4 mm
21. What's the warranty? The warranty policy can be found here.
22. What kind of files do I need to begin printing? Most of the host software products require a specific file format known as STL. If the model can be exported as a STL file, it should work.
23. It looks like a fairly standard design; is there anything about it that sets it apart?
The RP9 has a remote filament drive, keeping the mass of the extruder assembly to a minimum. The linear rods are supported at both ends making a relatively rigid machine. The motion control uses 7/16 threads to grip the string for the x and y axis. All of these features deliver accurate motion in a cost effective machine. Please review the assembly manual for more details.
